PHANTOM BROADCAST

John Duncan

After several recent works with radio used as a side element in my audio work, PHANTOM BROADCAST focuses again on shortwave as the full source material. With one slight twist.

PHANTOM BROADCAST is composed from a single shortwave transmission -- exactly where the signal originated, or what its original purpose might have been, were neither clear nor relevant. Recorded and processed with minimal modifications, the work is the result of a single, focused day-long session that could be likened to the process of automatic writing. The inherent unrefined audio fidelity of the source is maintained, while the processing reveals the 'presence' that would otherwise have remained hidden in the original signal.

PHANTOM BROADCAST is made entirely from shortwave sources recorded at Scrutto (Italy). All processing, mixing and mastering was completed in Stockholm. The material on the CD is a 2-channel mix from the 6-channel concert performed at Fylkingen on 20 September, 2002, organized by Ingrid Engarås. The release is dedicated to her daughter, Saga Cikoria Aradia Engarås, born several days later.
