HZ NET GALLERY #4: December 2004

special feature: HAN HOOGERBRUGGE

I bet anyone who is familiar with the works of Han Hoogerbrugge remembers the first time (s)he came across his work. His slick yet elegant style is hard to forget - at the same time his unique and eye-catching animation style seems to be a pure representative of our MTV media era, something that you know by heart.

In his Modern Living/Neurotica series (1998-2001), a series of small gif animations/flash clips, you meet its main and only character, who catches your eyes and brain by his humorous actions and gestures. Yet you will be surprised to learn how much of you this character conveys - the anxiety, anger, nervous edginess that you feel in your small everyday living environment. These feelings, however, are somehow hugely different from those that you have read in novels of the modernist era, since those you are experiencing are "instant" and "slightly constant" instead of "deeply rooted." They are also "comical" as well as "annoying" rather than "seriously tragic."

This exploration of his into our time's everyday psyche continues even in "Flow"(2001) which uses software flash masterly in its interactive-ness. In "Hotel" (2004) our "alienation" (another favourite word from modernism) is given a slight twist by his cynical observation and our mistrust over medical experiments and pills, the latter also revealing Damien Hirst's influence on Hoogerbrugge.

Here Hz presents 5 of his works with his own presentation texts.

MODERN LIVING/NEUROTICA SERIES (1998-2001)

The Modern Living / Neurotica series reflect my dreams, expectations, conflicts, experiences, hopes, defeats, fears, demons, questions, laughter, lust… It’s a self-portrait. It’s a private thing.

FLOW (2001)

The imagenary travels of a contemporary man trough the landscapes of our time. Sometimes he goes up, sometimes he goes down. By the guidance of the frantic music from Gil Kay we see the man struggle with faith and religion, sport and healthcare, stress, the power of medicine, gambling, death, identity, free floating and an eye-ball. It's an inertractive extravaganza.
A special version: 'Flow in an elevator' was shown at Ars Electronica 2003.

SPIN (2002)

"The Third Place" is the brand idea of PlayStation2 across all European markets. The concept centers on the idea that PlayStation 2 is a gateway to another world - the Third Place. This is a mental or spiritual place, which can't be defined as it's different for everyone. No one can tell you about your Third Place, you have to discover it for yourself. The Third Place is about exploration, discovery and adrenaline. Neither inside nor outside, not waking nor sleeping, here nor there - the Third Place is what you make it. The Third Place undergoes constant mutation through use/play, the Third Place is a place where the impossible becomes possible. Over the course of 2002, "thethirdplace.com" has developed into an online art-gallery, designed and curated by Hi-Res! and sponsored by PS2. The idea was to commission artists to develop interactive pieces based on their idea of the third place, every piece was located in the space. Contributors to the first phase, which ran until June 2002, included Joshua Davis, Insertsilence, Daniel Brown, Soulbath, Yugo Nakamura, James Tindall, Niko Stumpo, and Hi-Res!

HOTEL (2004/2005)

Imagine a private clinic, inside an Hotel that you enter as a volunteer to undergo some mysterious tests. Imagine a somewhat suspicious Doctor that does everything he can to make you fill out the entrance form, and that in his secret rooms venerates an alter ego as disturbing as himself, talking an unknown language. Imagine an hotel hall filled with absolutely normal (before proving themselves absolutely foolish) people, with waiters that serve you weird tablets and a butt naked clown that farts and pulls his dick as he sees fit. Imagine a bar like the one in Shining , claustrophobic loculi like the ones in Cube , a ‘Topolino Boys Meeting’, surreal situations and dreamlike sets, and when you’re done, perhaps you could imagine only half of what you would experience entering Hotel . Not least because you enter it as a volunteer, so you have to expect at least a car crash, a plane crash and who knows what else.

NAILS (2002 / ...)

Short interactive web animations. Little stories about everyday life. The character in the animations is drawn after a real life person.”
