MAPA

INFLUENZA

2002

This is an online work based on an algorithmic equation that creates a non-game, a non-interactivity based on a dis-structure of navigation created on a city map.  Or, perhaps, on a non-map. A map that diverts. The user accesses a series of windows where he/she will find a sequence of geometric grids. Kinetic relationships resulting from random combinations emerge in expansive movements in the two-dimensional surface of the screen. The pictorial and lineal possibilities presented at every click of the computer mouse are mere banalities compared with the complexity of the non-proposal.

Rafael Marchetti holds Bachelor of Fine Arts and studied programming since 1989, design and webdesign since 1996. He develops solo projects as digital artist at with group as in Influenza and Preguiça Febril. In 2005 some of Rafael's works were exhibited at Tohu Bohu Gallery (individual exhibition at Marseille), Comafosca (Influenza’s  retrospective exhibition at Barcelona), Nuevas Geografías (Mexico), Soundtoys, Runme, FILE (São Paulo), Breal 2.3 (Ljubljiana), Viper International Competition (Basel), 404 (Rosario), VII Digital Art Salon in Havana, ARS Electronica (Linz), among other places. Between 2004 and 2005 they've developed the installation Non_sensor at Cyprès institute in France sponsored by Unesco, Cyprès and the Ministry of Culture of Brazil. In 2005 Influenza (Raquel Rennó and Rafael Marchetti) is developing a project about residual communication in urban spaces at MediaLab Madrid.

TRIANGLES

COMPOUND PILOT

2005

Triangles evokes a spiritual context where users can explore a sonic stained-glass structure. Moving the mouse across the screen and clicking allows sounds to sustain and fade. Turning on and off the triangular panes mimics the orchestration of organ stops. The pulsing audio-visual elements and the modulating hues can induce a meditative state. It is a work in which interactive purity leads to a beautiful complexity of imagery and audio.

Compound Pilot (www.compoundpilot.com) is a series of collaborations in net art and interactivity. The beginning experimentations use flash's capabilities in graphics in combination with sound manipulation. Sometimes there is a direct correlation between the sonic and the visual elements, and in other cases this relationship is not so acute. Recent work from Compound Pilot has been presented at Soundtoys.net, Rhizome Artbase, 404 Festival, Seoul Net Festival, Pendu Gallery, and Chaise Issue Two.

STAND BY YOUR GUNS

JILLIAN MCDONALD

2004

Stand By Your Guns simultaneously glorifies and vilifies the handgun, masquerading as a children’s fun centre. Visitors can watch gun-TV, play games, visit Charlton Heston via webcam in his rest home (when available), colour pictures of guns, and print out their own slogans onto iron-on fabric for t-shirts. This project was a commission of New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc., for its Turbulence web site. This project was made possible by a grant from the Jerome Foundation

"I am a Canadian artist, transplanted in New York. I teach art at Pace University in New York City. My work has been shown recently at The Whitney Museum's Artport; Year Zero One in Toronto; Manifestation d'Art Internationale de Québec; 404 International Festival of Electronic Art in Argentina; BananaRAM in Italy; The Sundance Online Film Festival in Park City, Utah; The Cleveland International Performance Art Festival; La Biennale de Montréal; ISEA 2004 in Talinn, Estonia; and the Centre d’Art Contemporain de Basse-Normandie in France. Solo and 2-person shows in 2004-5 included Video Pool in Winnipeg, Edge Media in St John's Newfoundland, TPW in Toronto (presented at The Drake Hotel), YYZ in Toronto, and vertexList in Brooklyn (with Scot Kaplan). Recently, I have happily discovered playing the piano, backpacking, rock climbing, and running half marathons. Some of my favourite people are strangers."

MIRE CRUFT (after Karl)

ROBERT SPAHR

2005 - ongoing

DIGITAL INFORMATION IN THE AGE OF NETWORKED TERRORISM OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE LEFTOVERS
In the age of networked terrorism: when our electronic communications are routinely monitored, our right to alternative opinions is routinely questioned and our right to privacy is routinely at risk. I choose to use the tools of the age: writing automated scripts that harvest information from the internet, processing 0's and 1's into hexadecimal colors to create a new image, calling these digital leftovers 'Cruft.' I choose to ask: Who controls the images? Who is allowed to speak? Who is silenced? Who worships the most? Who salutes the longest? Whose truth is your truth?

Born in Wilmington, Ohio, Robert Spahr received a BFA Degree from the Art Academy of Cincinnati and an MFA from Parson's School of Design, New York City. Most of his career has been spent creating sculpture, performance art, experimental theatre and digital images. Spahr is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Visual Arts at Dowling College and Adjunct Professor of New Media at SUNY, Purchase College, New York. He lives in New York City.
